"Since when do you smoke?"
"A while now. Life can get stressful."
He barely made an acknowledgement noise, keeping his gaze stuck on the cigarette she held.
She tilted her head, and when the movement didn't catch his attention, she took advantage of his distraction to bring the little cylinder of paper to her lips. Maybe the hommage to a stupid, childish fantasy that had died with her in a basement, the childish tantrum of a voice that had been wiped out from her head, but which she could still remember very well, to bring satisfaction to the version of her that didn't get to survive. And when he didn't divert his gaze from her lips the moment she lowered her hand, a ghost cheered, and she couldn't help but smile. She didn't swallow the smoke, but allowed it to escape from her mouth, unwilling to make him lose his focus. She wondered how much of his attention he had conscious control over.
"You don't have to stay here, if the smoke bothers you."
He looked up at her, almost as if remembering that smoke, hands and lips existed because a person was behind them.
"You seemed down."
"Do I seem better now?"
"No. Less nervous. Not better."
